The arbutus, or strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo). Is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to Portugal’s mountains, including the high mountain regions of the country. It typically grows up to 6 meters tall with a rounded crown. Produces distinctive round fruits that ripen in autumn, changing color from yellow to bright red. These fruits have a rough surface, are edible, and are traditionally used for making a strong regional brandy called “Aguardente de Medronho”. The arbutus thrives in rocky soils and mild climates found in Mediterranean and Atlantic zones. Includes higher altitudes up to around 1200 meters. It also plays an ecological role as a resilient pioneer species that contributes to forest regeneration. Also provides food for pollinators during the autumn and winter months when few other flowers bloom. The tree is culturally significant in Portugal, especially in southern mountainous areas. Places like Monchique, where harvesting arbutus berries is a valued tradition.
